A lifelong career spent working to ensure the health of others.

Joseph R. Hollen, MD, CFP®

Joe Hollen is the President and Founder of Open Window Financial Solutions, Ltd. Opened as Hollen Financial Planning, Ltd. in 2004, the company was renamed in late 2013. Finance is Joe’s second career. He spent 23 years working as a successful emergency physician before trading in his lab coat and dispensing financial advice in lieu of medical care. Joe has been an Investment Advisor Representative since 2004, is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®), and earned the right to use the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professional designation in January of 2006.
During more than two decades in emergency medicine, Joe witnessed some fellow physicians, at the peak of their earning power, lacking full financial health. Some were victims of predatory financial practices, others of their own well-intentioned investing errors. When Joe couldn’t find the straight forward, unbiased, financial advice that he needed, he decided to become that resource for himself and others.
It may seem a peculiar transition, but Joe finds many parallels in his career paths as he continues to care for people and seek their long-term health. Today, however, that health is financial rather than physical. The scientific approach of a physician is also reflected in Joe’s approach, a simple philosophy that is evidence-driven, and based on Nobel Prize-winning research.
Joe began his financial education in 1981-82 as a self-directed investor when IRAs first became available. The next decade was spent contributing to these and his medical group’s self-directed pension plan. When he decided to change careers, Joe devoted the time and effort to becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®), the most recognized and highest standard that advisors can achieve.
Joe wrote the bi-monthly “Investor’s Corner” column for the Washoe County Medical Society newsletter for nearly a decade. He has presented to that organization, the Medical Group Management Association, and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). He is also a regular presenter to graduating residents and fellows of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Joe has been quoted in various national publications about financial planning and investment issues, including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
Joe is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (having spent his first two years of medical school at the University of Nevada, his undergraduate alma mater).  He practiced Emergency Medicine in northern Nevada for 20 years. He is a lifetime fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. During his active medical career, Joe was the president of Northern Nevada Emergency Physicians at Renown Health. He is an active board member and officer of the University of Nevada School of Medicine Alumni Association.
Joe and his wife, Robin, have been married for 36 years. Together, they have four adult children, all living in the Reno area.
